The Cost of Convenience

Plastic Waste Awareness

There are 50,000 pieces of plastic trash in every square mile of all the oceans on the planet. It’s not only killing aquatic life and birds, but also is now a part of our food chain. This project raises awareness of the amount of plastic waste generated by an entire school, business, or institution through the collection of discarded, single-serving bottles and creating a site-specific art installation with them. A month’s worth of plastic trash is collected and the total amount consumed is calculated, by the participants, during a single work or school day. When this can be clearly seen and the math is done for a year, the results are alarming. The Cost of Convenience offers an opportunity to engage in a dialogue about our culture, environment, purchasing habits, water privatization, and access. This project can involve a entire school or organization to call attention to one problem that has a very easy solution.
